How a Viral Coldplay Kiss-Cam Moment Spotlighted a Little-Known IT Company
From: The Wall Street Journal
When a kiss-cam moment gone wrong from a Coldplay concert this week started surging across social media, it put the spotlight on a small IT company few had ever heard of.
“On the plus side, we've all heard of Astronomer now, right?” Liz Leslie, a San Francisco-based digital marketing director wrote on LinkedIn.
Searches were spiking for “What is Astronomer” on Google after Andy Byron, the company's chief executive, was caught canoodling with Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot before dodging out of view on the jumbotron at Gillette Stadium outside Boston.
“Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy,” Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said from the stage. Byron is married, Astronomer confirmed.
By the end of the week, the little-known IT company had become a household name.
Astronomer released a statement Friday saying its board had initiated a formal investigation into the matter, and on Saturday the company announced that Byron had resigned.
It said that co-founder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy was serving as interim CEO while it searched for a new chief executive.
So what does Astronomer actually do? It provides an essential but under-the-radar component for companies that want to leverage AI: the infrastructure that helps them integrate their data into the applications where they need to use it. The company said it has worked with Apple, Ford and Uber.
Astronomer was founded in 2018 and as of May had raised $375.13 million from investors, according to data from PitchBook. The New York-based company has more than 300 employees. Investors include Bain Capital Ventures, Insight Partners and Salesforce Ventures.
AI can be fairly useless to companies that don't have a strong handle on their own data, meaning there is a growing need for better solutions here. Salesforce's $8 billion acquisition of Informatica and Snowflake's $250 million purchase of Crunchy Data highlight the trend.
Astronomer said its advantage is that it works in tandem with Apache Airflow, an open-source platform that is widely used by enterprises to orchestrate their data pipelines.
Will the Coldplay incident help or hurt the company's prospects in data orchestration? That remains to be seen.
“While the visibility puts a spotlight on who Astronomer is, this is not usually the kind of publicity that brings in new customers,” said Peter Davenport, senior strategic consultant at brand, marketing and communications specialist Definition. “In fact, it threatens to erode trust and authority built over years, especially in industries where reputation and reliability matter most.”
